The Perfect Weekend: Seattle to Mount Rainier in 48 Hours

You don't need a week to reset. A two-day trip from Seattle to Mount Rainier — done right — can feel like you've been gone for days. Here's the itinerary we'd follow ourselves.

Before you leave

Stock up on groceries in the city or stop at the Safeway in Eatonville (25 minutes west of Ashford). The cabin has a full kitchen, so bringing ingredients for two dinners and breakfasts means you won't need to leave the property once you arrive. The Ashford Valley Grocery is good for basics and forgotten items, but selection is limited.

Friday afternoon — The drive

Leave Seattle by 2:00 PM to beat the worst of Friday traffic on I-5 south. The full drive is about two hours under normal conditions. Take I-5 to Highway 512, then 167 south to Highway 161. From Eatonville, follow Highway 706 east — the last stretch is the best part. The road narrows, the trees get taller, and the river appears alongside you. You'll feel the shift before you arrive.

Check-in at Redtail Rendezvous is 4:00 PM. Your door code is sent 24 hours in advance. Park, unload, and start the fireplace. Dinner at the cabin tonight — cook something simple, open something good, and let the quiet settle in.

Friday evening — Settle in

Fire up the hot tub. The cover lifts off with the side straps and the water is pre-heated to 102°F. Pour a glass, sink in, and look up. On clear nights, the stars through the canopy are extraordinary. This is the part of the trip people remember most.

Saturday morning — Hit the trails

Get up early. Make coffee in the cabin (beans, grinder, and a drip machine are provided), eat a quick breakfast, and head to the park. The Nisqually entrance is a 10-minute drive. If it's summer, aim to be at Paradise by 9:00 AM before the lots fill.

For moderate hikers: The Skyline Trail at Paradise (5.5 miles, 1,700 ft gain) is the signature loop. On clear days, the views of the mountain, the Nisqually Glacier, and the Tatoosh Range are among the best in the park.

For an easier pace: Nisqually Vista Trail (1.2 miles) offers glacier views with minimal effort. Then drive down to Longmire and do the Trail of the Shadows (0.7 miles) — an easy meadow loop with mineral springs.

For waterfall chasers: Comet Falls Trail (3.8 miles roundtrip, 900 ft gain) is one of the tallest waterfalls in the park. Best in late spring when snowmelt is at its peak.

Saturday afternoon — Refuel

Head back to Ashford for a late lunch. Wildberry Restaurant does solid burgers and big portions. Or grab supplies from the cabin kitchen and make lunch on the deck. The covered outdoor seating area is perfect for post-hike decompression.

Saturday evening — The main event

This is the evening you came for. Cook a real dinner in the full kitchen — the island layout is designed for it. Light the fireplace, queue up something on the Smart TV, and let the rest of the day dissolve. End the night in the hot tub. You'll sleep better than you have in months.

Sunday morning — Slow departure

No rush. Check-out isn't until 11:00 AM. Make breakfast, have one more coffee on the deck, and take the long way home. If you have time, stop at Copper Creek Inn on Highway 706 for their famous blackberry pie. Or detour to Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville — especially great if you're traveling with kids.

The real point

A weekend at Mount Rainier isn't about checking boxes. It's about creating enough space that you actually feel the change. The mountain does the heavy lifting — you just have to show up and let it.
